Hacksaw Ridge tells a tale of humanity

Cassandra Downs, staff reporter

Hacksaw Ridge is a new historical movie that tells the story of the amount of love that one man, Desmond Doss, had for others and how that led him to save many lives, including the life of a man from the opposing side of the war. While it’s rated R for some of its slightly gory scenes and battle sequences, the movie offers humor, heartwarming scenes, and a clear depiction of the brutalities of war.

The tale follows the life of Doss, a combat medic in the United States Army who risked his life by going into combat unarmed, only focusing on helping others. Even with bullets and explosives coming at him, he kept going back to the battleground and saved the lives of 75 soldiers.

This movie is not an account about the brutalities and patriotism of soldiers in combat, but rather a lesson on how love really can conquer all. It sends the message that with consideration and understanding between enemies and friends alike, the world could potentially be a much more peaceful place.

While there are those that may not have been completely content with the movies outcome, there were likely many more whom were very pleased with it, including myself. People of all ages and genders walked out of that theatre with tear stained cheeks, some still trying to regain their composure. The tale of Hacksaw Ridge is definitely an impactful one, and the film was certainly well directed and produced, evidenced by its realism and capacity to move and inspire audiences. For those looking for a movie that will instill hope and leave the audience at a loss for words, this is the perfect movie.
